The last few years has shown a growing trend in couples either renting fancy, vintage furniture or finding pieces themselves to reupholster to keep.
I was recently involved in upcycling a pair of chairs for a bride to be. Her future mother-in-law found a pair of chairs and I was able to beget this specific vision for them! I primed & painted the wood with metallic gold and reupholstered them in a heavy emerald green velvet. Not used just for the bridal portraits, they were also used at the wedding reception as the bride & groom's seating. The perfect chairs for the wedding day became a great addition to their home decor as well. A gift like this is priceless by creating lasting memories! |

Slipcovers are showing up again in this home for another party. December I posted chair slipcovers for a holiday gathering. This time it was a bridal shower!
This leather chaise lounge is beautiful and carries unusual lines but the leather was dated. Spacing time between projects gives the homeowner a chance to let the design evolve and the budget stay on point. Fabric was found in the remnant section of a fabric warehouse. Smart thinking & timing is everything. This chaise has a very heavy, linen fabric with custom top stitching. Velcro on the slipcover as well as stapling it to the underside of the furniture ensures a snug fit with little movement. A fresh look for a simple piece.
Reupholstering a tiny, vintage chair that is not sturdy enough for human to take a seat, but perfect for a cat to lounge all day. A little paint, a little sanding, some linen & tacks hold this chair together with style.
How long we wait before finally doing something about our ugly furniture? Entertaining and special occasions prompt us to do something about our worn & tattered furniture.
You can cover the seats, however a slipcover with character changes an entire room. Is it money, selecting a fabric, selecting a style or you don't think about changes until the event draws near? Parties are an incentive to do all sorts of updates around the house. Deadlines are like magic, they mysteriously align the stars in our design universe. Cheers to a party! These Ghost Slipcovers are the perfect furniture protection from dirty little paws & the fur that comes with them.
A client decided her slipcovers needed daily protection from her dogs. Too many muddy footprints, slobber & fur was testing her patience with frequent laundering. Yes, it seems a waste to cover a new slipcover, but she was determined to find a solution. Protection with a design she can live with daily. She found beautiful king size linen duvet covers at IKEA. Clipping one side & bottom seams, we expanded the fabric to stretch across the sofa and developed the art of pulling & tucking! Beginning in the front to touch the floor & back to do the same, we tucked the fabric into the seat back & carefully worked our way around the arms. Allowing it to drape close to the floor here as well. The corner cuts were curved to keep the fabric floating instead of lying on the floor. All sides were given a double fold, 1/4" hem. Finding the fabric you love can help you live with your furniture on a whole new level. Slipping this off to launder is much easier than the original slipcover. Saving that look for company but loving the look in the mean time, is the goal The IKEA duvet costs around $90 and ends up being over 200" wide with a seam in the middle. It comes in white & putty color. Think of all the uses this huge piece of fabric can have! Clip, hem pull & tuck-sofas, chairs, bedding-all can be covered with an easy & relatively inexpensive solution. Wide drapes are a possibility. Are you going to make clothing with this beautiful white fabric? It's another fabric possibility! We continue to find new ways to use IKEA textiles. Never looking at fabric products as they are! Instead, look at the possibilities of what they can be!
Very often we forget about how things look in our homes until the holidays are upon us. Those flaws we look at daily seem to call to us more when company is coming!
These linen slipcovers are a simple answer your chairs' imperfections. IKEA brand linen drapery panels were prewashed and have become the perfect answer to this homeowner's fabric choice. The simple design of these slipcovers includes a 4" flat skirt and top stitching instead of a corded trim. The skirt is attached to itself around the back & arms. A look that works with traditional or modern style.
Working from my home has some great advantages, however, certain limitations add to the creative nature of how I do things. When making king size headboards, I build the magic at my clients' homes. Premade, they are too large to haul to a homeowners space and risk soiling in transit so, I precut much of the wood at my studio and finish details onsite. If any design adjustments need to be made, they can be made on the spot.
This understated, padded headboard for Patricia was built in her bedroom with fantastic vintage linens. Height and style can be redesigned to compliment the bedding. Her goal has been to create a quiet & calm palette to highlight her great bedding and furniture choices. Serenity has been achieved! I made the coverlet with painters' drop cloth! Lending more budget to pillows & furniture is always wise. She picks & chooses high end details where it matters. Funny how subtle this space is with that "Wow" factor being it's consistency in calm. |
